Neutrino Day makes learning fun in South Dakota
group of people posing with louie the lightning bug

For the past 15 years, Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, has hosted an annual Neutrino Day festival. The event offers a unique hands-on experience for visitors, encouraging people of all ages to take part in fun science experiments hosted by experts and companies from around the world.

SURF is the deepest underground science laboratory in the United States. Its depth and rock stability make it ideal for sensitive physics experiences that need to escape from cosmic rays, as well as for research into biology, geology and engineering.

Black Hills Energy was the premier partner of this year’s well-attended Neutrino Day event, which gave us an opportunity to tell visitors about electric vehicles. Volunteers manned our booth and shared information on Black Hills Energy rebates on EV chargers, Service Guard, and fun energy facts.

Some other attractions at our booth included a hand-crank energy production system, a lineman glove Lego challenge and temporary tattoos. Louie the Lightning Bug’s appearance was also a hit among visitors!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with this event.

We partner with our communities and customers, providing the kind of energy that fuels those areas and the lives of those we serve. Feel free to share the stories and photos. Follow us on FacebookInstagram, LinkedInTwitter, YouTube, and Pinterest for more!
