Planting trees safely

planting trees

Planning before planting trees can help make sure that you plant the right tree in the right place. Proper tree selection and placement enhance property values and prevent costly maintenance trimming and damage to your home.

Planting the right tree in the right place also means planting "power-line-friendly trees" if there are high-voltage power lines nearby. The location of these lines should be factored into your decision on where you plant trees. The mature height of a tree must be within available overhead space and a safe distance from power lines. Generally, it’s better to avoid planting trees of any type under power lines.

Never plant a tree that could grow within 25 feet of a power line. If you're not sure how far away a tree should be planted from a power line, contact your electric utility company.

MATURE TREE HEIGHT DISTANCE FROM POWER LINES
25 feet or less 10 feet
25 feet to 50 feet 35 feet
50 feet or more 45 feet

Here are some other tips for planting trees safely near power lines:

    • Choose a tree species that is known for its low-growing and compact growth habit.
    • Plant the tree in a location where it will have plenty of room to grow without coming into contact with power lines.
    • Avoid planting trees near overhead wires, transformers, or other electrical equipment.
