Colorado team member volunteers his expertise to ensure all can enjoy state park
chair

BJ Hartley wants to make sure everyone visiting Staunton State Park in Colorado, has a chance to explore the beauty there, regardless of their mobility.

One way he does this is by supporting the park’s Trackchair program.

Hartley, damage prevention coordinator in Black Hills Energy’s Castle Rock, Colorado, office, volunteers his expertise and time to maintain and repair three Action Trackchairs that Staunton State Park offers to visitors.

Trackchairs are all-terrain wheelchairs that allow people with limited mobility to traverse terrain that would not be accessible in an ordinary wheelchair. Visitors to Staunton State Park can reserve a chair for free to explore three specific trails, all with views of Pikes Peak, Lions Head and Mount Rosalie.

When the chairs require maintenance or upkeep, Hartley steps in to ensure the Trackchair program can continue. In addition to the Staunton State Park chairs, Hartley maintains all Action Trackchairs in Colorado and Wyoming. In the past four years, he has repaired about 100 chairs.

“I just like changing people’s lives and making people smile,” he says of his contributions.
