Black Hills Energy partners with local libraries to launch free energy savings Ready Home check monitor

Pueblo, CO — Nov. 16, 2021  Black Hills Energy is partnering with local libraries across its electric service territory to help customers save energy with its new Ready Home Check monitor program, the company announced today. The monitors are free to use and available to check out from participating libraries just as you would check out a book.

“Our Ready Home Check monitor program is an easy way for our customers to understand how they use energy in their homes and how they can save,” said Patti Olenick, energy efficiency coordinator for Black Hills Energy. “Plug any appliance into the Ready Home Check monitor and discover just how much energy is being used when the appliance is in use and even when turned off.”

“What you’ll discover when you use a Ready Home Check monitor is that older appliances tend to use a lot more energy than most people realize,” continued Olenick. “A newer model refrigerator, for example, costs about $60 a year to operate, whereas it cost $250 to run a refrigerator in the 1980s. The savings can quickly add up when armed with information available through Ready Home Check.”

With cooler temperatures arriving in our area, finding ways to be more energy efficient at home will help customers save energy and money in the coming months. The Ready Home Check monitor program is one tool Black Hills Energy offers to help customers discover where they’re using energy and how to reduce energy waste.
